Peter Wambugu is the agricultural innovator behind the Wambugu Apple—a fast-maturing, high-yield apple variety uniquely adapted to tropical and subtropical climates. With no formal agricultural training, Peter applied indigenous knowledge and grafting techniques to develop a resilient hybrid that begins fruiting in under 12 months and yields up to 500 fruits per tree annually.
Recognized by the Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization (KALRO), the Wambugu Apple is now commercially grown across Kenya and sought after for its early maturity, high productivity, and exceptional taste. Peter has scaled production from a small plot to over 20 acres, supplying premium outlets and establishing a growing network of outgrowers.

Today, Peter has transitioned leadership of Wambugu Apples Limited to his children, who have successfully scaled the enterprise to new regions within Africa and expanded market entry into other continents. Under their stewardship, the business is diversifying into seedling propagation, processing, and export, positioning Wambugu Apples as a leader in Africa’s fruit innovation and climate-smart agriculture.
